For those of you that love being outdoors and can also appreciate history, there are plenty of spots in Miami you can enjoy both at the same.  Whether it be a day at the pool, a nature walk, or even just to sit and breathe it all in, there is a little something for everyone.

The list of these outdoor historic places are as follows:

  1. Coral Castle, known for its true love story it features stones put together by a man out of the love he had for a woman and is open today for you to tour and learn more about the remarkable story and how he built it.  Edward Leedskalnin spent 28 years using only native coral rock and homemade tools to create this amazing structure.  Coral Castle is located at 28655 S Dixie Hwy in Homestead, FL.
  2. Deering Estate, a beautiful spot to take a walk under the long trail that leads you straight to the ocean.  Excavations at the bayfront compound originally owned by Charles Deering have uncovered the remains of prehistoric animals, and evidence suggests that Paleo-Indians were here more than 10,000 years ago.  There is a historic building on site full of history and they offer indoor or outdoor venue rental for all your events.  Deering Estate is located at 16701 SW 72 Ave in Miami, FL.
  3. The Venetian Pool, a spot to kick back and soak up all the sun or jump in 800,000 gallons of artesian water pool.  The Venetian Pool was created to satisfy the imaginative urges of local designer Denman Fink in 1923 where he transformed a rock quarry into a dramatically beautiful swimming pool that’s still a favorite place to cool off.  Not to mention, they usually have special events for the entire family to enjoy.  This pool is located at 2701 DeSoto Blvd in Coral Gables, FL.
  4. Art Deco Historic District, a hot spot for all the locals to walk and enjoy the art industry as well as many restaurants and bars.  The streamlined buildings that comprise this district reflects the architecture of the 20’s and the 30’s, back when the wealthy vacationers made Miami the resort destination of choice.  Reinvigorated in recent decades, the pastel neighborhood mixes old and new.  The Art Deco Welcome Center provides a great introduction to the area and carries maps of notable structures.  Tours of the district can be arranged through the Miami Design Preservation League and is located at 1001 Ocean Dr in Miami Beach, FL.
  5. Merrick House was built in the early 1900’s and was restored to its former glory, the home is still stocked with many of the personal effects of the Merrick family including family portraits. In the 1920s, Merrick designed many of the elegant mansions that can be found in this tree lined, upscale neighborhood. Take a guided tour through the house constructed of coral rock or wander on your own around the lovely gardens and grounds. The home contains many of Merrick's original furnishings and gives a glimpse of South Florida life during this period.  Merrick House is located at 907 Coral Way in Coral Gables, FL.

With all of these to choose from, you are sure to find something memorable to do with the family that is packed with history and nature alike.
