El Portal Historic Homes
Barely half a mile in land, El Portal is overflowing with intersting Miami history. In the Towering oak trees surround the area providing El Portal with a more intimate atmosphere. Neighborhoods throughout El Portal are prime examples of the architectural styles from the 1930s and 1940s. As a single-family home neighborhood, El Portal has homes ranging from architectually significant cottages to Mediterranean Revival and MiMo (Miami Modern). Once upon a time, El Portal was a Tequesta tribal capital, consequently the village is now full of Native American remnants. A fun fact about El Portal: The first archaeological site to be publicly recognized and preserved was The Little River Mound (yes, that's what it's really called) located in Sherwood Forest. The Little River Mound is an ancient burial ground turned grassy ridge. Miami is actually built upon historical sites and El Protal is home to some of the only ones that can be seen in public and on a daily basis.
